How adoption works at Greyhound Friends
At any given time in the kennel there are 20 to 30 beautiful greyhounds, mixes and hounds ready and waiting to be adopted. We encourage you to visit the kennel any day of the week between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
The adoption of a pet from Greyhounds Friends is a carefully structured process. We work hard to ensure that we place dogs in homes that are very well-matched and compatible. The safety and well being of each pet is of the utmost and prime importance for the organization and our staff. Please carefully read the steps in the adoption process. There is an adoption fee of $250 with each adopted dog (to offset the costs of transport, medical care and vaccinations, spaying/neutering, and shelter care).
Steps to adopt a dog from Greyhound Friends:
1. The first step in the adoption process is to visit the kennel (located in Hopkinton, MA - directions here). Anyone interested in adopting is welcome to stop by when it's convenient or, if preferred, an appointment can be made in advance by calling 508-435-5969. All people living in the home where the pet will live should plan to attend this visit. When you visit the kennel we ask that you also please complete the pre-adoption form and bring it with. We'll review your pre-adoption form with you when you arrive. The family information from the form helps the staff suggest dogs for adopters that best match their lifestyles and preferences.
2. Once the pre-adoption form is completed, potential adopters will be introduced to some of our dogs. Walking them on a leash or taking them into the fenced field for a run are ways to get to know a particular potential pet.
3. If a match is made and the adoption proceeds, an adoption form will then be completed and references checked. After all necessary paperwork is completed, you're able to take the dog home with you. We provide care information, some dog food to get you started, and a new collar and leash for your new pet.
